Customer Spotlight:
Dollar Days Stores
Just outside of Salt Lake City, Marty Menousek and his wife
Diane have operated their small dollar store chain, Dollar Days, for
the past 15 years. We spoke to them recently about their
experiences in the Beehive State.
Q: What do you enjoy most about the business?
A: Finding new deals and bargains to pass along to our
customers. That's a lot of fun and when we see new items we
still get excited.
Q: What would you say has been the key to your success?
A: Being hands-on. We work long and hard at getting
an idea of what the customer is looking for, and make sure the
customer finds it. And we try to be different.
Q: Do you talk to your customers a lot?
A: Oh yeah. It's a mom-and-pop business.
Q: What's been working the best for you?
A: We do fairly well in costume jewelry. In Utah the
population is pretty young and they have a lot of children, so we do
a lot of party supplies, bags, place mats and gift type things.
Q: How about Kole, how's your relationship been with them?
A: It's been fantastic, in fact they were our first
supplier when we opened the dollar store. They have treated us
professionally, they are outstanding to work with. You know
we've had struggles throughout this whole ride, and they've been
very patient and have worked with us. they will be honest when
I will ask bout a certain product, they'll tell us 'you may want to
steer away from that, it hasn't done very well' or if the quality
isn't there. Their line has expanded greatly and the prices
have decreased over years... which is hard to find in this industry.
Q: So you're happy with them?
A: Greatly. And I want to give a mention about
Barbara in the shipping department. She is a joy to work with
and I don't have to worry about the freight cost. She has the
lowest freight that I've ever seen and she'll tell me what the cost
of freight is going to be and I know that there is no way I can beat
it. I have recommended them to other stores around the
country.
